Beneficial Fungi

In this segment, Dr. Gail Wilson, Associate Professor of Natural Resource ecology and management, joins Oklahoma Gardening host Kim Toscano for a close look at fungal life beneath the soil surface.

Plant interaction with friendly bacteria gives pathogens their break

Professor Giles Oldroyd of the John Innes Centre explains how plant roots form beneficial interactions with microbes in the soil. Almost all plants associate with mycorrhizal fungi to help in the uptake of nutrients such as phosphate. Some plants, particularly legumes, also associate with bacteria that 'fix' atmospheric nitrogen into a form the plant can use as fertiliser.
In two papers published in Current Biology, the researchers describe how these two interactions are mediated within the plant by a common signalling pathway, and have identified a specific mycorrhizal transcription factor. They also show how the signalling pathway has been recruited by pathogenic microbes, presenting a challenge to the plant to make sure it only forms beneficial interactions

Sharon Long (Stanford) Part 2 : Function and regulation of Sinorhizobium nodulation genes

http://ibioseminar.hhmi.org/lectures/bio-mechanisms/sharon-long.html

Legume plants form specialized root nodules to host "rhizobia", nitrogen-fixing bacterial symbionts. Rhizobia hosting legumes are able to grow without exogenous nitrogen fertilizer allowing them to be high in protein and to provide nutrition to surrounding plants. In part 1 of her talk, Long gives an overview rhizobium-legume symbiosis including infection and nodule formation and the chemical signals exchanged between the plant and the bacteria.

In Part 2. Long goes into more detail on how chemicals released from legumes increase transcription of specific bacterial genes required for plant infection, while in Part 3 she describes how bacterial factors induce production of specific proteins by the plant. By using a custom gene chip, Long can follow the regulation of both Sinorhizobium genes and alfalfa genes at the same time, during nodule formation. This has allowed her to show that this is an extremely complex process with the expression of hundreds of plant and bacterial genes changing during this process.

http://www.ibioseminars.org/lectures/bio-mechanisms/sharon-long.html

Legume plants form specialized root nodules to host "rhizobia", nitrogen-fixing bacterial symbionts. Plants which can host symbiotic nitrogen fixing rhizobia are able to grow without exogenous nitrogen fertilizer. This allows legumes to be high in protein and to provide nutrition to surrounding plants. Genetic, molecular and cell biology approaches show that this process is quite complex and is governed in part by an exchange of chemical signals.

Dia de Campo na Tv - Secador Solar - Embrapa Amazônia Oriental

AmazoniaOriental

O ar sempre renovado no interior do equipamento impede que a umidade alcance níveis indesejáveis dentro do secador e prejudique a secagem.

Séminaire du 07 février 2012 : P for two- Partage d'une ressource rare en culture associée, le phosphore / Philippe Hinsinger, INRA UMR Eco&Sols
.montpellier.inra.fr/ecosols/

Genetic Roulette : The Gamble of Our Lives

GeneticRoulette

Are you and your family on the wrong side of a bet?

When the US government ignored repeated warnings by its own scientists and allowed untested genetically modified (GM) crops into our environment and food supply, it was a gamble of unprecedented proportions. The health of all living things and all future generations were put at risk by an infant technology.

After two decades, physicians and scientists have uncovered a grave trend. The same serious health problems found in lab animals, livestock, and pets that have been fed GM foods are now on the rise in the US population. And when people and animals stop eating genetically modified organisms (GMOs), their health improves.

This seminal documentary provides compelling evidence to help explain the deteriorating health of Americans, especially among children, and offers a recipe for protecting ourselves and our future.

Rencontre avec Pierre Rabhi

MrTransmutation

At the forefront of this struggle is renegade architect Michael Reynolds, creator of radically sustainable living options through a process called "Earthship Biotecture." Reynolds' solar homes are created from natural and recycled materials, including aluminum cans, plastic bottles and used tires. These off-the-grid homes minimize their reliance on public utilities and fossil fuels by harnessing their energy from the sun and wind turbines. In Taos, New Mexico, Reynolds gives us a tour of one of the sustainable-living homes he created.

Biodynamics Takes Root on California Farms

Produced by Maggie Fazeli Fard & Clare Major

“Biodynamic” agriculture looks a lot like organic -- it disdains synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and incorporates cover cropping and compost. It looks similar, that is, until a farmer buries manure-filled cow horns to harness cosmic rays. In biodynamics, that’s field preparation #500. There are eight others, involving combinations of plant matter, animal parts and powdered quartz crystals, which are either applied directly to plants or incorporated into compost, following astral calendars.

But biodynamic agriculture is not simply a hobby of the lunatic fringe; rather, biodynamics is a growing trend among farmers and vintners who see it as the “Rolls-Royce of organics” -- purer, more elite, rising above the organic fray.

So what IS biodynamics? Who's doing it? And is there any science to back it up? Maggie Fazeli Fard takes us behind the scenes for a hands-on look at three California farms where biodynamics is a way of life -- cow horns, sheep skulls, and all.

The Last Farmer (English subtitles) a documentary by Giuliano Girelli

thelastfarmer.org

The agriculture of farmers produces food for 70% of the planet’s population, whereas industrial agriculture covers no more than 30% of it. Nonetheless 2.8 million people in the world live on less than 2 dollars a day. Most of these people are farmers or ex-farmers who now live in shanty towns of one of the big cities of the world. This documentary is about them, about globalization and therefore also about us.
The Last Farmer explores the dramatic consequences of neoliberism and of globalization on the lives of small farmers in the world and follows the unfolding of a day’s events for Baldomera in Guatemala, Agi in Indonesia and Aloise in Burkina Faso. It includes interviews with Luciano Gallino, Hira Jhamtani, Giorgio Cingolani, Magaly Rey Rosa, Mamadou Goita and Roberto Schellino.

Director’s notes: While I was in Indonesia carrying out a first round of research on the small agriculture in Asia, I met Agi, a farmer from the island of Bali. It was in fact by spending a few days with him and his family with the purpose of doing some first shots that I realised that also our documentary should be built according to the criteria of being coherent with the subject we were treating. Because of this, rather than travelling around the world myself to gather other stories about small farmers, I decided to contact some friends of mine who are documentarians in Guatemala and Burkina Faso, so that they could be the ones to tell the story of their land and of their people. It was a little bit like creating a “zero food miles” documentary, a film which would try to avoid – where possible – the presence of an exclusively “Western” point of view on things.

LOCAL - Do you know where your food comes from?

Do you know where your food comes from?

In the past ten years, the organic food industry has become big business and consumers have been left wondering exactly what the word “Organic” means and how they can really know what they’re eating.

With the rise of farmer’s markets and more and more chefs sourcing their ingredients from local farms, consumers are now able to meet and talk to the people who are growing their food.

LOCAL discusses the rise of the local food movement, the challenges of sourcing locally and how it’s become a growing part of the Austin, Texas food scene.

Homo Toxicus : A documentary by Carole Poliquin

Hunger, Food and (Agroecological) Alternatives.

TransnationalInst

Speaker : Martha Robbins of National Farmers Union (NFU), Canada.

Today, a billion people live in hunger. Can we feed the world and achieve economic development while conserving ecosystems and improving the livelihoods of peasants and the rural poor?

Martha Robbins delivered this lecture as part of a day-long colloquium at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague, The Netherlands, on Monday 12 December 2011. The event brought together some of the world's leading radical thinkers and activists working on the issues of food and the future of farming, including Olivier de Schutter, Frances Moore Lappé, Miguel Altieri, Jan Douwe van der Ploeg, Eric Holt-Giménez, Robin Broad and Tony Weis. This was the third Critical Agrarian Studies (CAS) Colloquium at ISS co-organised by the Transnational Institute (TNI), the Initiatives in Critical Agrarian Studies (ICAS) and the Land Deal Politics Initiatives (LDPI).

Presentations addressed the following questions: How do we understand and tackle the interlinked agrarian and environmental crises? What types of policies create sustainable development that guarantees justice, equality and autonomy for poor and marginalized communities? What types of food movements have emerged and why, and with what challenges?

Eliot Coleman (Four Season Farm) Keynote at VABF 2011

earthfarmer

Year-Round Vegetable Production Using Organic Practices Eliot Coleman is one of America's most innovative farmers. His determination to grow organic vegetable crops during the winter for profit in Maine has started a revolution among small farmers and market gardeners throughout the temperate climate regions of the world. Thanks to Eliot Coleman's books such as Four Season Harvest and The Winter Harvest Handbook many Virginia farmers now look forward to the fall as a time to get started in crop production. Or-ganic growers are learning that there are often better opportunities for economic success in the cool off season than there are in the warm summer months. Quite a few members of the Virginia Association for Biological Farming remember hearing Eliot speak about organic farming practices used by small farmers in Europe at one of the Sustainable Agriculture Conferences held in Charlottesville back in the 1980s. His first book, The New Organic Grower had a huge influence on thousands of aspiring organic farmers. It gave everyone practical systems to follow in organic vegetable production that really worked. This book brought a great deal of new credibility to organic vegetable production by creating order out of chaos.

Organic Farming : Can It Feed Us?

VVHTV

VVH-TV News Special

Karl Grossman Chief Investigative Reporter examines Organic Farming on Eastern Long Island.

What is organic farming?
Organic farming can be defined as an approach to agriculture where the aim is to create integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural production systems. Maximum reliance is placed on locally or farm-derived renewable resources and the management of self-regulating ecological and biological processes and interactions in order to provide acceptable levels of crop, livestock and human nutrition, protection from pests and diseases, and an appropriate return to the human and other resources employed. Reliance on external inputs, whether chemical or organic, is reduced as far as possible. In many European countries, organic agriculture is known as ecological agriculture, reflecting this reliance on ecosystem management rather than external inputs.

The objective of sustainability lies at the heart of organic farming and is one of the major factors determining the acceptability or otherwise of specific production practices. The term 'sustainable' is used in its widest sense, to encompass not just conservation of non-renewable resources (soil, energy, minerals) but also issues of environmental, economic and social sustainability. The term 'organic' is best thought of as referring to the concept of the farm as an organism, in which all the component parts - the soil minerals, organic matter, micro-organisms, insects, plants, animals and humans - interact to create a coherent and stable whole.

The key characteristics of organic farming include:

protecting the long term fertility of soils by maintaining organic matter levels, encouraging soil biological activity, and careful mechanical intervention;

providing crop nutrients indirectly using relatively insoluble nutrient sources which are made available to the plant by the action of soil micro-organisms;

nitrogen self-sufficiency through the use of legumes and biological nitrogen fixation, as well as effective recycling of organic materials including crop residues and livestock manures;

weed, disease and pest control relying primarily on crop rotations, natural predators, diversity, organic manuring, resistant varieties and limited (preferably minimal) thermal, biological and chemical intervention;

the extensive management of livestock, paying full regard to their evolutionary adaptations, behavioural needs and animal welfare issues with respect to nutrition, housing, health, breeding and rearing;

careful attention to the impact of the farming system on the wider environment and the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats.
