Agroecology as a Transdisciplinary Participatory & Action-oriented Approach | PRESENTER: V. Ernesto Méndez, Gund Fellow, Associate Professor in the Environmental Program/Plant and Soil Sciences department at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at UVM.

This event is part of the weekly Gund Tea Series, an opportunity for affiliates of the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics and the broader University community to engage in robust discussion about topical research, current events, and relevant theory. The Teas host visiting scholars and research associates from around the world, as well as some of the Gund's very own fellows & students.

Marie-Monique Robin : Les moissons du futur

Après Le monde selon Monsanto et Notre poison quotidien, voici le troisième numéro de la trilogie de Marie-Monique Robin. Les moissons du futur est une enquête résolument optimiste sur les remèdes possibles à la crise alimentaire qui touche la planète. Une enquête menée sur quatre continents dans lequel elle montre que l'agro écologie peut nourrir le monde. Les moissons du futur sont dans la droite ligne des précédents documentaires de Marie-Monique Robin. Elle démonte ici les arguments de l'industrie agroalimentaire pour qui il n'y a pas d'alternative aux pesticides et qui prétend que l'agriculture bio entraînerait une baisse de la production de 40 % et une augmentation des prix de 50 %. Peu avant de débuter son enquête, Marie-Monique Robin avait rencontré à Genève Olivier de Schutter, le rapporteur spécial pour le droit à l'alimentation des Nations Unies, qui dit exactement le contraire. Avec ce film, elle entend donc sortir du discours dominant qui prétend que si on sort de l'industrie agroalimentaire c'est la famine assurée. Elle va montrer au contraire que l'agro écologie permettrait de nourrir la planète. Tout en pointant les raisons qui expliquent qu'aujourd'hui encore un sixième de l'humanité ne mange pas à sa faim, cette investigation démontre que rien n'est inéluctable. Du Mexique au Japon, en passant par le Malawi, le Kenya, le Sénégal, les états Unis et plusieurs pays européens, Marie-Monique Robin a filmé des expériences d'agriculture familiale et biologique efficaces d'un point de vue agronomique, économique et écologique. Elle montre que " l'on peut faire autrement " pour résoudre la question alimentaire en respectant l'environnement et les ressources naturelles, à condition de revoir de fond en comble le système de distribution des aliments et de redonner aux paysans un rôle clé dans cette évolution indispensable à l'avenir de l'humanité.

The Last Farmer (English subtitles) a documentary by Giuliano Girelli

The agriculture of farmers produces food for 70% of the planet’s population, whereas industrial agriculture covers no more than 30% of it. Nonetheless 2.8 million people in the world live on less than 2 dollars a day. Most of these people are farmers or ex-farmers who now live in shanty towns of one of the big cities of the world. This documentary is about them, about globalization and therefore also about us.
The Last Farmer explores the dramatic consequences of neoliberism and of globalization on the lives of small farmers in the world and follows the unfolding of a day’s events for Baldomera in Guatemala, Agi in Indonesia and Aloise in Burkina Faso. It includes interviews with Luciano Gallino, Hira Jhamtani, Giorgio Cingolani, Magaly Rey Rosa, Mamadou Goita and Roberto Schellino.

Director’s notes: While I was in Indonesia carrying out a first round of research on the small agriculture in Asia, I met Agi, a farmer from the island of Bali. It was in fact by spending a few days with him and his family with the purpose of doing some first shots that I realised that also our documentary should be built according to the criteria of being coherent with the subject we were treating. Because of this, rather than travelling around the world myself to gather other stories about small farmers, I decided to contact some friends of mine who are documentarians in Guatemala and Burkina Faso, so that they could be the ones to tell the story of their land and of their people. It was a little bit like creating a “zero food miles” documentary, a film which would try to avoid – where possible – the presence of an exclusively “Western” point of view on things.

With the rise of farmer’s markets and more and more chefs sourcing their ingredients from local farms, consumers are now able to meet and talk to the people who are growing their food.

LOCAL discusses the rise of the local food movement, the challenges of sourcing locally and how it’s become a growing part of the Austin, Texas food scene.
