Regenerative Landscapes : Ben Falk, Whole Systems Design

We develop human habitats - landscape and infrastructure systems - that yield perennial abundance and enduring value. These are adaptive, resilient and secure places in a future of peak oil, climate instability, and deepening economic insolvency. See the Site Consultation page to learn about how our process begins. We plan, develop, and manage land-based wealth preservation and security projects for those with the forethought to invest an abundance of present day resources to reduce their familly's vulnerability to future food, energy and other supply-chain disturbances, as well as peak-oil, climatic, economic and other events.

Permaculture - A Quiet Revolution

As corporate media fails to provide accurate news of the world's dire environmental predicament, the Earth sends a clear message in the form of record-breaking natural disasters, famine and epidemics. People are mobilizing for what lies ahead. In May 2007, the 8th International Permaculture Convergence (IPC8) was held in Brazil, bringing together visionary activists from 43 countries in the common goal of preparing for, and mitigating, our looming global crisis. Their strategy: Self-reliance and sustainability through permaculture. This timely documentary offers practical steps on how to 'permaculturize' our lives. It invites viewers into a permaculture community that spans the globe. Most importantly, it gives the critical inspiration needed to turn our backs on that which is failing us, and to create a sustainable future of our own making.

Greening the Desert with Geoff Lawton, Original and Update

Permasolutions
This half hour video documents the ongoing work of Permaculture Gurus, Geoff and Nadia Lawton, in the Dead Sea Valley. It begins with the famous original 'Greening the Desert' five minute video clip, and then continues into Part II, a 2009 update to the 2001 original.

If you prefer, you can watch the whole thing in one hit on : http://vimeo.com/7658282

You'll get to see and learn about the original Greening the Desert site and see some of the spin-off effects of its influence throughout Jordan, and you'll also be introduced to a new educational demonstration site that was started in 2008.

You can see the video, and more information about it, in its original post here:

http://www.permaculture.org.au/2009/12/11/greening-the-desert-ii-final/

This is inspiring, practical work - the kind of work that should be encouraged, supported and emulated worldwide. It is the ultimate root-cause type of aid work.

Creating a Permaculture Food Forest - Josh Robinson

bokashicompost

A food forest is a perennial polyculture of multi-purposed plants designed to not only produce lots of food, but provide many other services including pollination, pest control, fertility, mulch, and much more. This goes way beyond companion planting. Food forests are designed to be highly productive with the least amount of labor. This slideshow will explain how to create a sustainable orchard that is patterned after nature

This presentation was given by Josh Robinson on April 25, 2012 at the San Diego CRFG chapter meeting. For more info about our chapter and CRFG visit: http://crfgsandiego.org/

Speaker Bio:
Josh Robinson has a strong love of plants, soil, and ecology. It is only natural that he finds himself working to transform conventional landscapes into their full and sustainable potential as abundant gardens of Eden. Josh is certified in permaculture design and has a master's degree in Ecological Landscape Design. Josh also encourages people to reclaim their own gardens through education. He has taught numerous classes, workshops, and slideshows on permaculture and ecological landscape design including courses through Northern Arizona University, Coconino Community College, Prescott College, and the Ecosa Institute. Josh lives and gardens in San Diego at Higher Elevation Permaculture, an upcoming urban permaculture demonstration site. Please visit: www.EdenOnEarthLandscaping.com & http://sdsustainable.org/

Peter Bane - How I'm Preparing for the Local Future: Permaculture

newculture

Permaculture - (n) agricultural system or method that seeks to integrate human activity with natural surroundings so as to create highly efficient self-sustaining ecosystems

Educator Peter Bane is preparing for the local future, beyond the global economy and after peak oil. Bane's talk is the story of the history of permaculture, and how he has used permaculture methods to move towards a self-sustaining homestead using free or low-cost techniques.

Peter Bane is the publisher of Permaculture Activist Magazine for 20 years. He is a garden farmer in Bloomington, Indiana. He teaches permaculture design for Indiana University. He has a bachelors from University in Illinois in political design. Bane has a diplomna in permaculture design from the British Academy of Permculture design. He served on the peak oil task force for the City of Bloomington, Indiana, which was adopted in 2009 December. Bane is currently working on a permaculture handbook for people who live in the suburbs.

In this talk, Bane describes, in his own words, how he is moving beyond the money economy, to providing his essential needs from his homestead, and how he is utilizing the principles of permaculture.

This talk immediately followed Nicole Foss's talk on how she prepared her family for peak oil and economic uncertainty.

Recorded at the International Conference on Sustainability: Energy, Economy, Environment 2010 hosted by Local Future and directed by Aaron Wissner.

Maarten Stapper: "Agricultural Science and Technology is Stuck in a Rut"

I’ve been a fan of Maarten Stapper’s work for a while now. In fact, further below you’ll find an article I wrote, way back in 2007, about his experiences at the hands of his former employer — Australia’s publicly funded CSIRO agricultural research body. I’d recommend you read the article before watching Maarten’s IPC10 Convergence presentation, as it’ll give you a good backgrounder on his valuable work and his commendable ethics. I say ethics because instead of compromising his principles so as to retain favour with those putting bread on his table, he stood his ground… and got sacked instead.

While too many scientists will simply turn a blind eye to retain their paychecks, often with disastrous consequences for society, Maarten persevered in speaking the truth about the root causes of, and the solutions for, Australia’s agricultural and environmental problems, whilst speaking out against the Big Biotech multi-nationals and their ’science’ that ignored both. The article below is an infuriating read, but I think sometimes it’s good to get infuriated about critical issues….

In Maarten’s video presentation above he lays out the truth about most of our specialised, reductionist, western agricultural research — that follow-the-money tragedy that sees all research compartmentalised and isolated and which incentivises all the wrong activities. With good doses of science and common sense, he leads you through a progression of thought that brings us to the great need of the day — participatory research by and for farmers and gardeners everywhere.

Curso de Sistemas Agroflorestais - ipoema.org.br

permacultube
